Description |
A new variety of rice that outyields all existing varieties and matures faster has been developed by the West African Rice Development Association. The new variety, ROHYB 1 5-WAR-3-3-B-2, has been developed by cross-breeding varieties from other countries. It has strong seedlings which are resistant to stemborers, seedling blast and crabs, and is fully resistant to brown spot. The new variety matures in 135 - 150 days, which is 10 days less than existing varieties. This makes it very suitable for coastal areas, where an early harvest is desirable so that the saline floodwaters are avoided. However, it can tolerate some salinity as well as some acidic soils ROHYB 15-WAR-3-3-B-2 has been on trial for the last two years in mangrove and associated swamps in several West African countries. At the Rokupr Research Station it yielded 4.3 tonnes per hectare compared to 3.9 t/ha for ROK 5, which is the variety commonly grown. In farm trials in Sierra Leone and Guinea it outyielded ROK 5 by 10%. On all sites it averaged 3.9 t/ha compared to 3.5 t/ha for ROK 5. In one fertile mangrove swamp it yielded 7t/ha without extra fertilizer. The palatability is comparable to ROK 5. It has long, slender and translucent grains which are favoured by farmers in West Africa. For further information write to: West African Rice Development Association P.O.
