Description |
Estimating the state of the climate and its spatiotemporal changes are crucial to understand and elaborate in turn proper management strategies for agricultural activities in the arid zones of our globe. Central Asia, one of the largest irrigated areas in the world, contributes to the global food security. On the other hand also the Central Asian agricultural communities are threatened by water scarcity both by human and natural causes such as climate change impacts. This is true also for the Khorezm region, located in the downstream reaches of the Amudarya River and part of the Aral Sea basin and where more than 60% percent of the rural population heavily relies on irrigated agriculture. Due to the environment and agricultural conditions in this region it is crucial to estimate the potential and actual ET based on long-term changes of climate variables under the circumstances of water scarcity. An increased understanding can thus improve water use efficiency in agriculture.
