This report contains five chapters, collectively providing background information and review of past research at Karkheh with some relevant information from across Iran. This is the first of a series of research reports on Karkheh, summarizing the available data and information on natural resources and livelihoods and identifying the gaps which need to be addressed in the present as well as future projects. The production of the chapters has been facilitated by ICARDA through close cooperation with NARS of Iran. The chapters stress the main challenges to improving WP and are authored by NARS scientists who have first-hand knowledge of the issues and on going on-farm research experiments at Karkheh.
