Description Here we present the de novo assembly of 454 sequencing reads from two normalized sweetpotato libraries, together with publically available (expressed sequence tag) ESTs, which resulted in a gene index for hexaploid sweetpotato. This gene index facilitates the access to sweetpotato gene sequences and has allowed for the design of gene-based microsatellite markers.
