The agenda for sustainable economic development primarily focuses upon growth with stability. Fisheries is one of the key sectors of Indian economy contributing to about one per cent of the national GDP and 4.12 per cent of agricultural GDP (2003-04). Rationality in terms of economics and extension of appropriate technologies plays a major role in attaining optimum production, equitable distribution, efficient marketing and evolving alternate management strategies for balanced development of the coastal population. Marine fishing industry in India has undergone progressive rapid changes in the last four decades with intensive mechanisation process leading to the increased production of shrimps and fishes, but at the cost of disturbing the distributive justice that has marginalised the traditional sector. The traditional sector opted for rapid motorisation of the artisanal fleets during the eighties mainly to overcome this unbalanced economic growth. This issue has been effectively tackled by extensive capacity building efforts by scientists/ extension workers in disseminating feasible, economically viable and suitable technologies to the coastal people. It has been proved in each and every phase of technology transfer that the involvement of the fishermen is a necessity for quick adoption and wide spread diffusion of the innovative technologies in capture and culture fisheries.
