Description The growth and moulting of three species of Panulirzcs, :lamely Panulirus
homarus (Linnaeus), Panulirus ornatus (Fabricius) had Panulirus penicillatus
(Olivier) in captivity have been studied. The average growth increment per moult
was 2.3-3.4 mm carapace length (6.9-9.6 mm total length) for male and 2.3-3.0 mrn
C.L. (6.5-9J lam T.L.) for femzb P. homarus, 2.7 mm C.L. (111.3 mm T.L.)
for male and 3.3-4.4 mm C.L. (111 ,843.8 mm T.L.) for female P. ornutus and 1.5
nun C.L. (5.5 mm T.L.) for male P. penicillatus. The growth rate has been found
60 be higher in younger individuals than in older ones. P. homarus moulted eight
timw in about fifteen months, P. ornatus moulted sewn times and P. penicillatzrs
six times in albout twe3tyom months. An instance of breeding in captivity i % P.
homarus is reported. The prospects for culturing lobsters in Mandapam area are
indicated.
