Title Traditional practices of coastal aquaculture and sustenance fishery in India

Creator Ramamurthy, S

Subject Marine Fisheries

Description India is bestowed with about 2 million
hectares of brackish water areas all along the
coast Though fish culture is as old as civilisat
ion, practically very little of these areas are curr
ently utilised for productive purposes even by
traditional practices . On a modest estimate, if
20,000 ha could be brought under scientific
culture operations to produce annually an average
500kg/ha, our country could produce an additi
onal one million tonnes of fish (Jhingran, 1975).
