Description |
In 2013, scientists using Parkes Telescope reported an exciting new discovery: Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). These radio pulses only last a few millionths of a second, and appear to be coming from other galaxies, although we don't yet know what is causing these amazing bursts of radio light. So far, Parkes has been the most efficient pioneer of FRB discovery. We are now using Parkes to test what physical object is giving rise to FRBs. We are looking at a field near the Virgo Supercluster that is over-full of nearby galaxies; if FRBs are from nearby galaxies, we should discover more than usual in this field. We are also coordinating with several telescopes around the world to look for optical light related to the event that causes the bursts. |
