NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Telescope, in low earth orbit, observes some of the most energetic objects in the sky. Among these are pulsars, the magnetic, incredibly dense cinders of massive stars. These spinning stars emit copious gamma radiation, and just like lighthouses this beam of gamma rays repeatedly sweeps over the earth. These pulsars often also emit radio waves; indeed, pulsars were originally discovered with and are most often studied with radio telescopes! In this project, we're searching for the radio waves from gamma-ray pulsars, since detecting both kinds of light increases what we can learn from these amazing stars.
