Description |
In the binary pulsar zoology, Black Widow and Red Back pulsars represent two peculiar species belonging to the larger family of the eclipsing pulsars. In these systems, the pulsating radio signal emitted by the pulsar is eclipsed (sometimes for an entire orbit) due to the effects of the plasma released by a companion star. Both Black Widow and Red Back are very precious systems to be studied, since they are the manifestation of a crucial phase in the evolution leading from an old slowly rotating neutron star to the formation of a rapidly spinning pulsar, rotating at periods of few milliseconds. Unfortunately, Red Back pulsars are also rare, hence it is very important to increase the number of catalogued objects. This program is focused on 3FGL J2039.6-5618, a recently discovered binary system already observed in the optical band and known to emit both X-rays and gamma-rays. The aim is to investigate with the Parkes Radio Telescope if it hosts a radio pulsar, which would confirm the hypothesis that this system represents an additional Red Back binary pulsar. |
