Description |
This project returns to the crime scene of one of Parkes most famous discoveries: the Fast Radio Burst (FRB) 010724. This enigmatic pulse of radio emission, colloquially known as the Lorimer burst, was seen for the first time in 2007 in archival data taken by the dish on August 24, 2001. A total of 16 FRBs are currently known, one of which has recently been shown to repeat. It is currently unclear what FRBs are, and what fraction of them repeat. FRBs appear to be extragalactic in origin and are currently among the most actively researched class of transient astrophysical sources. FRBs hold great potential as probes of the free electrons along vast stretches of the visible universe and could someday be used to constrain amount of dark energy present in the universe.
