Title P262 - Timing of Young Pulsars

Subject Astronomical and Space Sciences not elsewhere classified

Description Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars which are formed in supernova explosions. Young pulsars often emit pulses over the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays. Radio observations provide essential parameters so that astronomers using X-ray and gamma-ray satellite observatories can detect the pulses. The pulse periods of young pulsars also fluctuate much more than for their older brethren. These fluctuations, which include upredictable jumps known as glitches, result from processes occuring inside the star and give us a unique opportunity to investigate the super-dense material of a neutron star.
