Description |
We are looking for evidence of a pulsar in the remnant of supernova 1987A. Although a neutrino burst in 1987 signified the formation of a neutron star, it is possible that this later collapsed into a black hole or quark star before becoming a radiating pulsar. We'd like to detect the pulsar to make sure we understand supernova explosions as well as we think. The rotation period of the pulsar will tell us about the formation mechanism for such remnants.
