Description |
A newly-discovered star appears to be producing radio waves. The star is in the centre of our galaxy, but the properties of the radio waves indicate that they're coming from a lot closer than this. We believe that the star may actually be producing gamma-rays, which travel through space until they hit the Earth's atmosphere, where they start cascades of fast-moving particles in the air above the telescope. These cascades could be the source of these radio waves, which would explain why they appear to be coming from such a short distance. We are trying to find out if this explanation is correct.
