Pulsars, the remnants of violent stellar supernova explosions, are precise "cosmic clocks" that can be observed with radio telescopes like Parkes. The discovery of a pulsar orbiting a black hole would allow astronomers to directly measure the properties of a black hole for first time! Earth' s nearest supermassive black hole lies at the centre of the Milky Way and is about 4 million times the mass of the Sun. We aim to find pulsars going around this massive black hole and measure its properties!
