Description |
We propose to search for giant pulses from pulsars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Giant pulses have intensities of more than 10 times the pulsar mean intensity, and therefore enable us to identify distant pulsars in other galaxies. We will use the multibeam receiver to target a Crab-like pulsar, J0537-6910, in the LMC, which has only been identified in the X-ray band and is likely to show giant pulse activities. The multibeam receiver will cover the central region of the LMC and allow us to search for giant pulses from other pulsars and identify new pulsars. Such studies would also help us understand the origin of fast radio bursts as they have been proposed to be giant pulses from extra-galatic pulsars.
