Description |
The World's largest telescope, the 500m FAST telescope, has recently commenced observations in China. One of the primary science goals is to discover new pulsars, a form of extreme star. With its huge sensitivity, FAST will discover a huge number of these stars. It is necessary to monitor these stars over many years in order to understand how they evolve and whether they have orbiting companions (the first extra-solar planets were discovered around a pulsar) and so we will use the Parkes telescope to first confirm the existence of the pulsars and then to monitor them over the timescale of this project.
