Description Flnfish export from India is growing rapidly since 1991 92 and
currently forms the single largest commodity in our seafood market.
The major varieties exported are ribbon fish, pomfrets, seerfish,
mackerel, reef cod and snappers. The total quantity of all finfishes
exported during 1995-96 is to the tune of 1 lakh tonnes fetching a revenue
of Rs.372 crores. This has far reaching impact on the domestic
prices of almost all varieties offish. The present analysis based on data
from CMFRI and MPEDA intends to assess the trend in production and
export trade of selected varieties of finfish, to compare the export and
domestic market price structur3 and to evaluate the potentials of
aquacvlture to maintain the domestic supplies and price stability.
