Description The polynemids contributing to fisheries along the Indian coasts are dealt with. The biological behaviour
of the concerned species in relation to their fisheries, especially in the north eastern and north western parts of
the country is discussed. The Bombay and Saurashtra wateis are the richest, contributing to about 80%
of the polynemid landings of this country. The species forming the bulk of the landings Potydactylus indicus
(Shaw), one of the two polynemids which grows to over a metre in length, the other being Eleutheronema
telradactylum (Shaw). The declining trend in the fishery of P. indicus is reflected in the low yields of the
total polynemids of this country in recent years.
