Description This research project on impact assessment of MGNREGA project activities in India has been implemented by ICRISAT in partnership five other organizations across five different states of India. This project attempts to analyze impacts of social safety nets, MGNREGA program in particular, on various social outcomes such as on changes on income, debt, food security, asset creation of the participant households. The survey sites include 18 villages spread across five states of India namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. This study uses household level panel data compiled from ICRISAT VDSA project, and supplemented by several other special purpose surveys in the same study regions where VDSA project is working. The project addresses following specific objects.1) Examine and quantify impacts of MGNREGA on households’ income, food security, education of children, livelihood assets and related welfare indicators in the SAT region; 2) To analyze impacts of MGNREGS on the selected welfare indicators of the households; 3) To contribute in development of informed policy prescriptions through outputs and knowledge sharing widely. The project is using following analytical tools and techniques to meet the study objectives. They are: a) Panel form of regression models, b) Village Level Social accounting Matrix (SAM); c) Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA and PIA); d) Review and comparative assessment across the States/sites. ICRISAT in collaboration with the following partners are involved in implementation of this project: 1) Gujarat Institute of Development Research, Ahmadabad, Gujarat (GIDR); 2) South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (SACWATER); 3) South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh ; 4) Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Tamilnadu.
