Description The study is based on household level panel data collected by ICRISAT under the Village Dynamics in South Asia (VDSA) project. A total of 864 panel households covering 18 villages across six states in India are studied for four years (2009-10 to 2012-13). These 18 study villages and sample households come from different rainfall zones representing varied infrastructural and socio-economic conditions. The eighteen villages are spread over nine districts of six different states in India namely Andhra Pradesh (2 villages), Maharashtra (4 villages), Karnataka (4 villages), Gujarat (4 villages), Madhya Pradesh (2 villages) and Telangana (2 villages). The aim was to understand the traditional methods of farming in the SAT region. Data from 40 households (10 each from landless, small, medium and large landholding groups) for each of the study villages was collected except the traditional villages (2 from Telangana and 4 from Maharashtra) where the survey were conducted from first generation Village Level Studies(VLS) study that is during 1975-1984. In the traditional villages, along with the original sample households, split households were also consider in the sample.
