Description The Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of CMFRI is extending its services to the needy stalk holders of fisheries sector of Andhra Pradesh since its inception in 1947 as a Survey Unit.
The centre benefits the mariculture by supplying inoculums of live feed marine micro algae to shrimp hatcheries all along the Andhra Pradesh and East coast of India at nominal cost.
The major success achieved in Brood stock development, sex reversal, induced breeding and larval production of Orange Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus coioides and Indian Pompano, Trachinotus mookalee for the first time in India will go way forward in aquaculture development of Andhra Pradesh.
The centre has achieved success in design and development of open sea floating cage in 2007 for the first time in India and also demonstrated the technology for culture of marine finfishes and shellfishes particularly at Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Srikakulam, East Godavari and West Godavari Districts in Andhra Pradesh and also in Odisha and West Bengal involving fishermen cooperative societies.
This centre provides the major input source to state government by providing the necessary management advisories for sustaining the marine fisheries of Andhra Pradesh.
The centre has bagged recognition in Pop –up satellite tagging of yellow fin tuna carried out first time in India for studying the growth and migration pattern of the resources, which will be useful for fisherfolk in targeted yellowfin tuna fishery.
It also provides consultancy services for state government and other funding agencies in Fabrication and deployment of artificial reefs for marine fisheries management.
