Description A major programme of the Centre of Advanced Studies in
Mariculture of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute is conducting of researches in mariculture to evolve appropriate methods of culturing molluscan shellfish of economic value. Progress is being made in several areas such as hatchery systems, seed production, bottom and off-bottom culture, predator and disease control and processing and marketing of molluscan shellfish. In addition to increasing shellfish production through modern mariculture
techniques, it is necessary to ensure that the shellfish harvested are of good quality and be safe for human consumption. Without assurance of high quality and purity of shellfish, India's potential for increased production of shellfish for domestic consumption and exports will not be fully realised.
