Description This flatfish is widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific. It is generally found in nearshore, soft-bottom
habitats where it is a component of the various demersal fisheries. Although it is considered a
commercial species in many places, it is a relatively small component of the overall fishery and flatfish
landings are rarely identified to species or even genus. As a result, despite the body of work available,
population data are available only for small geographic regions and limited time series. Where available,
there have been indications of localized decline (e.g., in Iraq, the abundance and size of individuals
found in local markets have decreased) and stability (e.g., catch per unit area remained constant over a
5-year time series). Globally, its contribution to demersal fisheries is unknown. However, it is widely
distributed and common in museum collections. Therefore, this species is listed as Least Concern.
However, research is needed to determine the contribution of various small-sized flatfishes to demersal
fisheries.
