Description This species is restricted to marine waters off southern Africa, from the Cape Peninsula, South Africa to
Maputo Bay, Mozambique. In the early 1900s, this species drove the development of the coastal fishing
fleet on Agulhas Bank. Historically, it was a major component of the inshore (< 110 m) trawler catch. The
implementation of Total Allowable Catch management schemes for commercially exploited species,
including the Agulhas Sole, led to the diversification of the inshore fleet and a decrease in directed
fishing effort; as a result, this species has been considered a highly-valued bycatch species of mixedspecies
trawl fisheries. Although it retains a high value, it is a relatively small component of the overall
fishery and limited fishery-independent data are available. As a result, despite the body of work
available, population trends are inconclusive. Between 1965 and 1990, catch rates (kg/hr) declined by
almost 50% but annual catch and catch rates remained relatively stable between 1975 and 1995.
