Description |
This study furnishes data on the catch, effort and species composition of catfishes in pair trawl operations during 1988-'92 at Rameswaram Verkottil landing centre. During their introductory operations in the Palk Bay, the pair trawlers brought enormous quantities of white pomfrets, hence the gear came to be known locally as Vaval madi' (In Tamil Vaval'means white pomfret and 'madi’ means net). However, In the following years, the composition of the dominant species in the catches varied and in 1992, oil sardines constituted about 71% of total landings. Pair trawl has proved to be the most efficient gear in this region exploiting shoaling fishes moving slightly above the sea bottom
