Summary, etc. We report a facile method for the synthesis of Na<sup>+</sup>/Ca<sup>2+</sup> ions modified TiO<sub>2</sub> xerogels by coprecipitation method followed by calcination process. The resultant materials were characterized by Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Raman Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and  High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM). Presence of sodium and calcium ions can influence the crystallinity of rutile TiO<sub>2</sub>. The photocatalytic performances of modified materials such as Na-TiO<sub>2</sub>, Ca-TiO<sub>2</sub>, Na-Ca-TiO<sub>2 </sub>and bare rutile TiO<sub>2</sub> materials were evaluated by calculating the amount of hydrogen evolved during the photocatalytic decomposition of water under light irradiation.This study will be effective in determining the effect of alkali/alkaline earth metal ions on rutile TiO<sub>2 </sub>
