Description |
Coral reefs are possibly the most productive marine ecosystems in the world and contribute about 1% of the total net primary production in marine realms. Despite their relatively small contribution to overall , marine primary production of the globe their existence is of great importance from the social and resource point of view. Coral reefs a r e important to many islands and continental margins because they protect the coastline againt waves and storm surge. They also provide nursery grounds for juveniles of coral reef fishes and hence influence commercial fisheries too. Coral reefs also allow the development of shallow sedimentary basins and the associated mangrove and seagrass communities. |
