Description The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), established in 1947 is the largest
among the eight fisheries research institutes under Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
The institute is mandated to conduct capture fisheries and mariculture research and has
significantly grown in stature and research infrastructure over the past six decades. The annual
marine fish landings crossed 3 million tonnes in 2009 and has been showing gradual upward
trend since then. We are fully prepared to face the challenges facing the sector on account of
high fishing pressure on the resource, climate change, market dynamics and global pressures.
Research is geared towards proactive interventions to make marine fisheries sustainable,
environment friendly, economically attractive and socially relevant.
The Handbook of prawns is highly illustrative comprehensive guide to the identification of
commercially important prawns landed along the Indian coast. The taxonomic keys for
identification of families, genera and species will help the researchers, students and field workers
to identify the species with ease and accuracy.
