Description India has vast aquatic resources which are not judiciously and profitably utilised for useful purposes. There has been a constant threat to these resources because of the population pressure. As a consequence, the aquatic resources both in inland and coastal areas are increasingly resulted into habitat loss, over-exploitation of fishing grounds, pollution and eutrophication. Increasing nutrients load, pathogens, introduction of exotic species and disposal of litter at sea affects the composition and abundance of biota in the aquatic environment and poses serious health hazards to consumers. Intense human activity also resulted into the decline of fishery resources and nursery habitats. There is need to understand the various aspects of pollution and environmental threats to aquatic species. Management strategies arc needed for protection and conservation of our aquatic resources through catch improvement and production increase.
