Description International Potato Center (CIP) and partners collaborated to develop orange-fleshed sweetpotato varieties, such as Chipika, Ana-Kwanire, Kadyaubwerere, Mathuthu, Kaphulira and Zondeni . These varieties were formally released in Malawi between 2009 and 2011 and they were heavily promoted by different development organizations in the country. Its success was attributed to its health related attributes, high yield, high seed quality, and good taste. A DNA confirmation activity was conducted as a subsample of the representative household survey to Malawian sweetpotato producers from May to July 2019. The sample size includes 369 households and 955 leaf samples from sweetpotato varieties in 93 villages, in 52 EPAs and 27 Districts. Besides leaf samples from selected households, declared varietal sweetpotato names as well as plot area measurement were also collected. Leaf samples were sent to Diversity Arrays Technology Pty Ltd in Australia for DNA extraction and DNA fingerprinting.
