Description |
Garlic bulbs, after one month's curing, were graded into 2 weight classes viz. 20-30 g and 10-15 g. The bulbs were packaged individually and in lots of 8 in perforated polyethylene bags of 200 gauge and irradiated with 6 Krad -6-0Co gamma rays. Irradiated and control bulbs were stored at room temp. (75-90 degree F) and at 32-35 degree F and RH 85-90%. There was an increase in respiration rate soon after irradiation which continued up to 4 months storage and then decreased. Physiological wt. losses were higher in the smaller than the larger sized bulbs. Irradiation resulted in a reduction in wt. loss both at room temp. and 32-35 degree F. Minimum wt. loss was observed in irradiated, individually packaged bulbs. % sprouting was greater in the larger than the smaller bulbs; irradiation inhibited sprouting at room temp. and there was complete prevention of sprouting at 32-35 degree F after a storage period of 9 months. Packaging singly in polyethylene bags, selection of small sized garlic bulbs, storage at 32-35 degree F and irradiation with 6 Krad -6-0Co gamma rays are recommended for extension of the storage life of garlic bulbs.
