During 2016, CIP and OFIAGRO estimated postharvest losses in the Ecuadorian potato value chain. This research was carried out in potato-producing areas belongs to Carchi province. The results indicated that the losses reached 26% with respect to the overall potential yield, and the main causes were bad weather and frost (29%), late blight (23%), and white worm (16%). As late blight was the main biotic risk identified, we evaluated the use of the Hand Held- Decision Support System (HH-DSS) to reduce chemical control costs and environmental impact derived from fungicides. The HH-DSS consists of four concentric circles that were described by Pérez (2014, 2020). Farmers that followed HH-DSS criteria obtained lower values of an environmental impact compared to those who managed late blight with their own criteria. In both cases, late blight was controlled with the same effectiveness and obtained a similar yield, but with less fungicide cost in farmers who used HH-DSS. Efficient management of the disease with rotation of active ingredients and adequate concentrations are other advantages to use HH-DSS.
