Description Geographically, Karnataka state is wedged
between the Western Ghats in the east and the
Arabian Sea in the west. Karnataka is endowed with
300 km of coastline, 27,000 sq km of continental
shelf, 87,000 sq km of EEZ and 8,000 ha of brackish
water area. There are 156 fishing villages and 88 fish
landing centres in the three coastal districts namely,
Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.
There are 12 fishing harbours, five in Uttara Kannada
and seven in Dakshina Kannada. The state has the
largest purse seine fleet in the country and its dual
trawl fleets, single day fleet (SDF) and multi-day
fleet (MDF) are modern and dynamic.
