Description Parapenaeopsis stylifera (H. Milne
Edwards, 1837) is a commercially important medium
sized prawn of the Indo-Pacific waters. This is a
littoral species but known to occur up to 90 m depth
in the western Indian ocean (Miquel, 1984). The
genus Parapenaeopsis constitutes twenty three
species. In India, 11 species have been recorded
namely Parapenaeopsis stylifera (H. Milne
Edwards, 1837), P. sculptilis (Heller, 1862), P.
hardwickii (Miers, 1878), P. tenella, (Bate, 1888), P.
cornuta (Kishinouye, 1900),
P. acclivirostris Alcock, 1905; P. maxillipedo Alcock,
1906; P. nana Alcock, 1905; P. uncta Alcock, 1905;
P. indica Muthu, 1972; and P. longirostris Chanda
& Bhattacharya, 2004. All these species are marine,
except P. cornuta and P. indica which are mainly
found in the mouths of the estuaries and rarely in
the sea.
