Description Today all of us use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Slide Share, Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn and many more of such social media sites as each one of these provides many important features. The social media is a very strong and useful platform and it has changed the teaching learning process altogether. Recently, due to Covid - 19 pandemic, the teaching learning was one of the very important concerns and indeed was mostly affected. Therefore, it was very important to somehow continue the studies and for this online teaching learning method was the only effective solution. Thus, the various higher education institutes did follow the online teaching learning pattern. The social media or the social sites provide a means of communication between teachers and students, and these are the virtual places where people share different types of information. Since the smartphones today, already are equipped with these popular social media applications like face book, YouTube, twitter etc. the concepts of the online teaching learning is not at all a new one. The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature related to the use of social media at higher education level. The method presented here makes use of survey done in questionnaire format and then results are formulated in the form of chart and tables. There’s a strong outcome that the use of these social sites from not only teaching learning point of view, instead lot many other activities has undoubtedly resulted and provided quite satisfactory outcomes to all of us. The paper also highlights future research concerns of adopting the social media with major focus on features such as privacy, security and content quality etc.
