Description The Indian subcontinent with a total Iand area of 3.3
million km2 and a coast line of 8041 km is blessed with marine
wealth. The west coast of the country is bordered by the states
of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. The east
coast is constituted by the marine boundaries of Tamil Nadu,
Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal.
Besides these, we have sovereign rights over the waters around
the Lakshadweep group of islands situated in the Arabian sea
and Andaman & Nicobar group of islands situated in the Bay
of Bengal. As per the laws of the seas convention, every
country has sovereign rights over the waters lying within 200
nautical miles perpendicular to its respective coast line. This
sea area is called the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The
nations have absolute rights to explore, exploit, regulate and
conserve the living and non-living resources within their EEZ.
