Description The development of fisheries of the Indian Ocean
and of the countries bordering it received focussed
attention only in recent years. The Food and Agriculture
Organisation of the United Nations started
evincing direct interest in the development of fisheries
of this region with the formation of the 'Indian Ocean
Fishery Commission' in 1967, under Article VI of the
FAO Constitution. The objectives of this Commission
are "to promote, assist and co-ordinate national programmes
over the entire field of fishery development
and conservation; to promote research and development
activities in the area through international sources,
and in particular international aid programmes; to examine
management problems with particular reference,
because of the need to take urgent action, to those
relating to the management of offshore resources".
Several subsidiary bodies of the Commission including
the regional "Indian Ocean Programme" are operating
at present to help the countries in different fields of
fisheries and their development without either overinvestment
or over-exploitation.
