Abstract | The acid catalysed dissociation of iminodiacetatotetraammine cobalt(III) complex has been studied in the [HNO3] range of 0.05-0.40 mol.dm-3 at I = 0.50 mol. dm-3 (NaNO3), in the temperature range 35-50-degrees-C. The reaction exhibits a solvent deuterium-isotope effect k(D2O)/k(H2O) = 2.32 at 40-degrees-C. The solvent deuterium isotope effect is consistent with a rapid pre-equilibrium protonation followed by rate determining ring opening, and excludes a mechanism involving concerted attack by [H3O]+. The magnitude of the solvent isotope effect, suggests an A-1 type reaction to give a five-coordinate intermediate. |
