Abstract The results of a study on the direct electrochemical oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium at a Pt-Ru catalysed, activated coconut shell charcoal substrate electrode are reported. Physico-chemical characterisation of electrodes was carried out using XRD, SEM, EPMA, BET and chemisorption techniques. Tt was found that the roll - bonded electrodes fabricated with Pt-Ru on a charcoal substrate and containing Pt:Ru compositions in the atomic weight ratio of 80:20 (% w/w) and a platinum loading of 6 mg cm(-2) provided an anode polarization value of 400 mV at a current density of 60 mA cm(-2). Based on these studies, Pt-Ru catalysed activated charcoal substrate electrodes fabricated by a roll-bonded (RB) method appear promising for use as anodes for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC).
