Chow-Chow is indigenous to Mexico. It is a semi perennial plant remaining economically viable up to 5 years. It produces vigorous vines 12-15 m long, requiring support trellises or training on to a "pandal". Flowers are unisexual; staminates are arranged in pedunculate and erect racemes, 10-30 cm long or more in wild plants, and usually with flowers arranged in fascicular or subracemose clusters disposed at intervals along rachis.
