Description |
In view of commercial importance of Cotton crop, a very basic and important issue that has become a matter of concern among policy makers, researchers and industries is the reliability of data on Cotton production. Two types of estimates of production of Cotton are released in India. First official estimates released by Directorate of economics and Statistics (DES), Ministry of agriculture and Farmers welfare, Govt. of India. The second estimates are the Trade estimates released by Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) in Consultation with Trade organizations. It has been observed that over the years that there is a wide gap between the official and trade estimates of cotton production. IASRI took a study in which studying the factors contributing to differences in DES and CAB estimates of cotton production. Under the study, a total of ten districts, five from Maharashtra and five from Andhra Pradesh were selected on the basis of previous five year’s area figures under cotton crop. Stratified multistage random sampling design is adopted for carrying out the Survey.
