The importance of increasing the production of fruit cops hardly needs to be emphazised especially in view of the fact that the per capita production and availability of fruits is very low. It is, therefore, necessary to formulate suitable development programmes for increasing the production of fruit crops. However, this is not possible in the absence of comprehensive and reliable statistics regarding area, yield rates and cultivation practices of fruits. The present position in regard to statistics of acreage under lime, life other fruit crops is not vary satisfactory. So far as yield statistics are concerned, no reliable information is available regarding the average yield per tree. The total production is estimated by the official gency on the basis of normal yield of 12000 lbs per acre and is entirely based on subjective judgement and has hardly any relevance so far as the yield for a particular year or tract under varied soil and climatic conditions is concerned. In order to fill up the lacuna in agricultural statistics and supply sound basis for the planning of development in horticulture, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research initiated a series of sampling investigation on a coordinated basis on important fruit crops.
