DUE TO LACK OF IRRIGATION FACILITIES , ERRACTIC DISTRIBUTION OF RAINFALL ( 1000- 1500 mm) , HEAVY SOIL EROSION ON UNDULATING TOPOGRAPHY AND SMALL SIZE HOLDINGS, FARMERS IN SHIWALIKS HAVE FAILED TO SUSTAIN PROFITABLE AGRICULTURE. IN VIEW OF THIS, SOME ALTERNATE AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED FOR PRINCIPAL LANDUSE FORMS OF THE REGION. TEH AGRI- SILVI- HORTICULTURAL SYSTEM PROVIDED NET RETURNS VARYING FROM RS 15,000 TO 21,000 HA/YEAR AS AGAINST RS 4900 TO 9800 OBTAINED FROM DOUBLE CROPPED CONSERVATION FARMING SYSTEM OF MAIZE+ BLACKGRAM FOLLOWED BY WHEAT_+ MUSTARD. IN THE AGRI- HORTICULTURE SYSTEM , THE HIGHEST NET RETURNS OF RS 35,40 /ha/year WERE OBTAINED IN SUBABUL + GUAR COMBINATION. THE NET RETURNS INCREASED BY 100% WHEN BLACKGRAM WAS INTERCROPPED WITH SUBABUL. BY INTRODUCING SUBABUL , THE CROP YIELDS DECREASED BY 30 TO 38% BUT THE LOSS WAS CONVERTED TO GAIN BY THE RETURNS FROM FODDER AND FUELWOOD. Not Available |
