An extensive study of bleaching of grey jute fabric with sodium hypochlorite, sodium chlorite and hydrogen peroxide was done. Grey jute fabric was also scoured and subjected to bleaching by the above mentioned processes. The grey jute fabric attained reddish tone after scouring. Scoured jute fabric bleached with sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide resulted in drastic reduction of whiteness and with sodium chlorite, improvement of whiteness was observed as compared to grey fabric bleaching. Bleaching of grey jute fabric with sodium hypochlorite produced very poor whiteness while bleaching with sodium chlorite produced unsatisfactory whiteness. Only hydrogen peroxide bleaching was found to achieve satisfactory level of whiteness.
