The goal of improving rural livelihoods has now become a major research agenda in the country. This assumes greater importance in disadvantaged regions like the rainfed, arid, hilly and tribal areas where the vulnerability of the population to external shocks is high. This vulnerability needs to be addressed through imparting new skills to the poor, building of durable income generating assets, capacity to adapt to rapidly changing market environments and empowerment of women and farmer groups.
