Land resource information system and NBSS&LUP BHOOMI Geo-portal have been
developed to facilitate the services like visualization, access, quering and dissiminate the land resource
information and develop various applications. The Geo-portal hosts the available soil resource database
on 1:1 m and 1:250,000 scales, Agro-ecological regions, Agro-ecological sub-regions, soil loss, degraded
and wastelands data. Digital Elevation Models developed from SRTM (90m) and ASTER (30m) of India
have also been deployed. The deployed point layer data includes rainfall, benchmark soils, soil series for
selected states and districts, soil loss and soil fertility. The schema has been developed for input soil
parameters to effectively store, update, manage and query the soil resorrce database from seamless land
resource information system. The developed user interface of NBSS BHOOMI Geo-portal act as a
gateway to visualize various land and allied thematic layers. The WMS architecture allows the user to add
new map service to the existing service, produce a map of area of interest, answer the queries about the
content of the various thematic layers. Various utility tabs, like data query, extracttab, legend tab, etc.
were added to make the thematic map services more interactive. The Geo-portal administrator manages
the contents, services and access protocols. Depending upon the level ofauthorizations, the users are able
to visualize, pan and download thematic maps, create new services by integrating them with other themes.
The advantage of developing such dedicated Geo-portal is to eliminate redundancies, duplication of
efforts, enforcing consistency, standards, and sharable protocols to build cross-domain knowledge based
applications for effective utilization of available land resources in agricultural land use planning in the
country.
