The study was carried out for development of methodology for selection of polarization and resolution which is best suited for soil moisture estimation using RISAT-1 microwave data in the study area. Fine Resolution Sensor (FRS) image (spatial resolution of 3 m) and Medium Resolution ScanSAR (MRS) image (spatial resolution of 25m) acquired at circular and Dual polarization have been used for the retrieval of soil moisture and to identify best polarization resolution suitable for the study area. FRS and MRS both shows slightly higher soil moisture estimation compared to ground data collected. Circular polarization and dual polarization soil moisture estimation was compared with respective volumetric soil moisture values. Dual polarization shows more accurate result as compared to circular polariastion. FRS data is more suitable than MRS data for the estimation of soil moisture of the study area. FRS RISAT-1 data with dual polarization gives more accurate values in comparison to FRS Circular polarization data. A correction factor of -0.90 can be applied to RISAT-1 derived soil moisture estimates for getting near ground truth values.
