Lac insect, Kerria lacca are placed under the order Hemiptera, superfamily Coccoidea, family
Tachardiidae. They are characterized by the presence of a special type of mouth-parts, called the
sucking type, intended for sucking plant juices- this is the sole mode of their feeding. The voyage of life
of lac insects begins with completion of embryonic development within the body of the mother when
eggs change their position in the ovariole. Eggs then travel through oviducts and come out of the
and resinous cell. Hatching of eggs mostly takes place before reaching the incubation chamber has
called as viviparity.
