A field experiment was conducted during 2013 to study the effect of farm yard manure (FYM), poultry manure and vermicompost along with Azospirillum strain on soil biological properties, growth and yield of tomato var Utkal Kumari. The treatment, vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1 along with Azospirillum strain @ 5 kg ha-1, showed higher fruit (27.61 t/ha) and stover yield (9.38 t/ha) in comparison to other treatments. Plant height at 30, 60 and 90 days after planting and fruits/cluster (3.90) were maximum in the same treatment. Interestingly, it was also observed that the performance of tomato with respect to fruit diameter (5.23 cm), fruit height (4.90 cm) and girth of plant (4.67 cm) were statistically significant in the same treatments. The soil dehydrogenase activity (125.26 µg TPF g-1 soil day-1), soil respiration (250.22 µg CO2-Cg-1 soil day-1) and the soil bacterial population (88×106 no. CFU per 1 g soil) was also observed highest in the plot where Azospirillum strain was applied along with vermicompost.
